It is an old story. It is dusty, cracked, aged and boring. Not only days long old. Sony restored the service a few days ago. Not only weeks old... The service was down for about 2 weeks. We don't speak about a "bit more than a month". Yes: It took weeks for Sony to notice that the hackers took the data about SOE customers. But it is a years old story. "Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" We all know this famous quote right? People don't know how Sony protects their data, they don't know how a such network should be protected, so why should they care about it? Bullshit.

We suffered some hardware failure and our irc server is offline, and likely to remain offline for some time. We plan to move ircd to a temporary host while we can replace the damaged hardware. Thanks for your patience.

Update 1: /server 195.56.77.123 helps you to connect to a temporary server, and we are working on other solutions.

In many years and decades our focus was to develop interesting and detailed characters that cannot be described in a few words. It was true both for Player Characters, Non-Player Characters and Monsters. One of the most famous D&D Adventures is I-6 Ravenloft. Was Strahd interesting because of "monster status", a non-playable race with an entry in Monster Manual? No, Strahd was interesting because of the story. Dragons in DL series could be another example. But things have changed. Now some blog on Wizards site about how "monster status" makes certain races special. Sadly that blog isn't right.

Sometimes player characters decide to start a business, sometimes it surprises a DM who doesn't know what to do with it. The problem is twofold. And as you can guess a surprised DM might have to think about how this turn of events will change his game. How to avoid this problem? You can plan your game with such events in mind. We all heard rumors about how D&D 4 is getting "old" and how D&D essentials is a 4.5E and that maybe in a year or two we might see D&D 5th edition. There are some speculation already about what will the next edition offer. I am sure you can already guess D&D Insider like subscription is a good way to generate income on a reliable basis, and Hasbro likes the success of this service. The next D&D edition might be even more digital? ...

When you design combat encounters you often decide about what kinds of opponents your PCs will face, you think about where they will fight with the PCs and you also think about their tactics. As you can guess: Your PCs will find a tactic to win the fight. But sometimes winning the fight isn't enough. Sometimes the characters might have other goals in the fight and they might be more important than actually winning the fight. And this is the chance to make encounters more interesting.

I have heard some of my articles are "anti 4e", yet they don't speak against 4th edition. Most of the articles I write intentionally leave the conclusion to the reader. Yet both 4e fans and 3e fans think they favor the other edition. But neither of them is right. Lets admit something: 3rd edition managed to keep most people who played 2nd edition, and 4th edition managed to convert most 3.5E players, and almost everyone was happy with the change. Developers of the game managed to make the majority of players happy and it was their job. With this we have to admit 4th edition looks like a good game. And the same can be said about 3rd edition.

Often people ask me why I don't like a certain edition and game, and soon the discussion will be about very different topics. Some of my key points won't come through this way. And while in the past I tried to explain why a game isn't that successful, right now I will try to explain why I don't like it. And I am sure you will be surprised to hear some pretty new reasons against some games and editions. And as you see they aren't about the surface of the rules, they are about deep design concepts. And one of the concepts is Game Balance.

We hear endless arguments comparing 4th edition of D&D to 3rd edition. And we all know if you are fan of one edition you wouldn't listen to most arguments because you think you have heard it all. And often when we discuss 4th edition we would discuss in along these well known lines. Nothing would change. Of course I have read some stronger arguments. Short stories that were written to show how the flaws of one system can influence the story. The "and the adventurers stopped to play chess with the dragon, and after defeating him in 3 steps of long tactical battle, they looted its masterwork full plate from its corpse." And the story often included how some dragon items were perfect fit for a halfling. It is better than the "same old rant" but certainly doesn't tell you why some players prefer to avoid both.

What Facebook has to do with roleplaying? Besides some RPG related groups I would speak about one interesting thing: "fake personalities" used for marketing. Either by your own staff of by people who provide paid posting services. Pretending to be another person, another poster is in essence roleplaying. Of course you can think about it, or leave it to some professional posters. The option is yours. But why is it so important nows? Top News changed how company Facebook pages work. This is discussed widely, and some conclusion is: More activity on a page makes it more visible.

If you know what Evening Doji Star means you probably already have a trusted source of information when it comes to stock market news. If you don't know the meaning of it, you probably think you don't need advice about it. Much less from the perspective of any gamer. Much less from a Gamer who speaks about a MMORPG Bubble? And if you want to learn more about, you can guess the image came from Wikipedia, and you can just check that site. But then you won't see a good explanation to some problems in the economy. Why should you care about how a gamer sees economy? Why should you trust my explanation more than what you hear from analysts with good reputation? Let me explain. But if you are interested only in how it affects RPGs, MMORPGs turn to page two.
